Morningside Park is a natural area park in the east end of Toronto. It is primarily a passive park which attracts visitors from across Toronto. It is a popular destination for group picnicking, cycling and hiking. Its prominent feature is the Highland Creek River Valley which creates naturally eroded cliffs, steep forested hillsides, wetlands, and small streams. It is also habitat for some regionally rare plant species and was recently designated as an Environmentally Significant Area within the City of Toronto with portions of the park already Provincially designated as an ESA.
The purpose of the study was to provide a concise framework to guide decision making for the ongoing improvements and management of the 168 ha site for park users as well as the protection and enhancement of the park’s natural environment.
thinc design prepared the master plan which included an extensive site analysis, public and stakeholder consultation, and detailed some 60 recommendations for future improvements. This included recommendations regarding existing and proposed trails throughout the park’s sensitive natural areas.
