Anniversary Park sits at 410 Parliament Street, on the north-west corner of Gerrard Street East and Parliament Street in Cabbagetown. It is a small, mostly passive park shaded by mature Norway maples around a central ornamental fountain, and it lies within the Cabbagetown South Heritage Conservation District.
thinc design leads the project for the City of Toronto, Parks, Forestry and Recreation, from consultation and concept design through detailed design, tender and contract administration. The design is coordinated with the City's Gerrard Street East reconstruction so the park and the street read as one place.
The plan keeps the fountain as the focus and retains the best mature trees, with new shade trees and perennial planting that includes Indigenous species. A new unit paved plaza holds curved benches, tables, pedestrian scale lighting, a bottle filling station with a dog bowl and a park sign.
Indigenous design runs through the park. Bands of paving and a low fence carry a motif inspired by the Council Fire wampum belt, and interpretive signage explains the placekeeping features. The work was developed with Trophic Design, an Indigenous owned landscape architecture practice, and the City.
