The Allan Gardens Teaching Garden is located on the park’s west side, between the Children’s Conservatory and the playground. This City of Toronto project expanded and enhanced the existing teaching garden to create a more inclusive and flexible space for education and community programming.
The design adds new planting areas for edible plants, taking advantage of the sunny southeast portion of the site to support productive growing conditions. Accessible walkways and improved surfacing create a continuous, barrier-free circulation network throughout the garden.
A shaded gathering space with flexible, movable seating provides a hub for workshops, teaching, and small events. Bollard lighting extends the garden’s usability into the evening, while integrated electrical outlets allow for expanded programming.
Existing iron fencing and metal planters were salvaged and reused, reinforcing a sustainable design approach. New metal planters of varying heights and sizes, including wheelchair-accessible options, support a wide range of users.
The project was funded by the City of Toronto, with generous support from the Garden Club of Toronto.
