Colonel Samuel Smith Park is situated along the Lake Ontario shoreline, and is a popular wildlife and bird watching destination. In 2013, thinc design was retained by the City of Toronto to design and implement a structure to replace an aging and vandalized popular wood viewing structure in the park.
The new structure was designed to fit within the existing footprint and to further a design language initiated in an earlier project for the Brickworks site in Toronto designed by thinc design partner Peter Heyblom.
The structure is designed using industrial grade galvanized steel grates surrounding an ipe wood deck centre. Handrails were designed to minimize visual obstructions for visitors of all sizes. Custom curved ipe benches around the edge of the structure complete the design. The combination of standard and custom details created a cost effective and durable lookout structure for park users and nature enthusiasts.
