Both of these projects consist of park and playground revitalization/retrofits which respond to updated community programming and needs.
North Withrow Park was suffering from an outdated and overused playground. This project saw the revitalization of the playspace into a dynamic new gathering space for the Riverdale community. The work included a new playground layout, exciting modern play equipment, a sleek shade structure, a labyrinth wading pool pattern, a sand play ‘beach’, sinuous limestone walls, new planting (trees and groundcovers), increased seating opportunities, and new walkways. A central concept was one of interactive and inclusive play which inspired the imagination, but was durable and cost effective.
Degrassi Street Park is a small parkette which underwent an update to its circulation, planting, surfacing and playground. The project was an endeavour in balancing existing features – all the trees and select perennials – with new elements. A challenge was maximizing the small footprint in order to gain as much play value as possible while complying with CSA standards and tree preservation zones.
thinc design provided a full design service for both of these parks. The work included: schematic and detailed design, contract documents, cost estimating, contract administration, public open house, and project management. Both of these parks opened in 2014.
