The City of Quinte West is a geographically large municipality of approximately 500 km2, created through the amalgamation of the City of Trenton, Village of Frankford, and Townships of Sidney and Murray in 1998. Located between Toronto and Kingston, the City is a growing community that is home to almost 50,000 residents. It offers a mix of rural and urban lifestyles and is a sought after tourism and recreation destination as a result of its connection to the Trent-Severn Waterway.
Quinte West is also home to the 8 Wing/Canadian Forces Base in Trenton. The City’s recreational assets include arenas, community halls, a marina, the full-service John Williams Branch of the YMCA Central East Ontario, over 85 kilometres of trails, and 35 parks that feature outdoor rinks, courts, sports fields and diamonds, playgrounds, splash pads, a skate park, and a dog park.
Over the next 15 years, Quinte West’s population is projected to increase from 46,560 to 54,036 residents through an expected 4,000 new housing units. To support this growth, the City contracted thinc design to lead a multi-firm consulting team in developing a Parks and Recreation Master Plan to guide the management of municipal parks, recreation facilities, and community services.
The final, Council-endorsed document outlines 124 recommendations that reflect the City’s commitment to fostering healthy, active, and connected lifestyles. The Plan takes a fiscally responsible approach to addressing current and anticipated needs for parks, recreation facilities, and community services while aligning with key municipal policies, including the Official Plan, Active Transportation Plan, and Tourism Development Strategy.
